NEALE PRIOR

It's not quite business as usual at Moore Park Golf Course since a fire on Tuesday morning gutted the course's pro-shop.

Police and fire brigade officers removed eight of the motorised golf buggies from the building before the fire reached them.

The pro-shop is operating out of rooms in the golf club, but club captain, Mr Ron Hirst, said visitors would have to bring their own clubs because the shop's hire sets were amongst those destroyed.

A Randwick man driving along Anzac Parade, Moore Park, at 12.30 am on Tuesday noticed smoke coming from the pro-shop.

When he drove up to it he saw a man run around the back of shop and into the darkness across the fairways.

The fire brigade was called. It took them 90 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

A brigade spokesman said there was a strong smell of fuel when firemen entered the building.

The man seen running from the shop is described as 175 centimetres tall, of solid build and possibly with a beard. He was wearing a dark windcheater and pants.
